Children‘s Eye Exams
Supporting Young Eyes With a Lifetime of Healthy Vision
Even if your child isn’t complaining about their vision, that doesn’t mean everything is working as it should. Kids often adapt to vision problems without realizing it, but undetected issues can affect their ability to learn, focus, and thrive.
At Lynn Valley Optometry, we create a child-friendly exam experience that’s comfortable, thorough, and even fun. Our team uses age-appropriate tools and techniques to assess eye health, development, and visual function - far beyond a basic vision screening.
Whether your child is just starting school or heading into their teen years, we’re here to support their vision and confidence every step of the way.
What to Expect During a Pediatric Eye Exam

A Warm Welcome
Our front desk team will greet you and your child with smiles (and maybe a treat or two). We’ll gather a brief health history, listen to any concerns, and explain what to expect in kid-friendly language.

Pre-Testing with a Gentle Touch
We use child-appropriate tools and techniques to assess how their eyes are developing. This might include looking at eye movement, depth perception, colour vision, and focusing ability, all in a relaxed setting.

A Focused Exam with Your Optometrist
Your optometrist will evaluate your child’s eye health and visual function, checking for early signs of conditions like amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (eye turn), or myopia (nearsightedness). We’ll always explain our findings clearly and take the time to answer your questions.

Personalized Recommendations
Once the exam is complete, we’ll walk you through the results in clear, simple terms. Whether your child needs glasses, eye drops, myopia care, or a follow-up plan, we’ll make sure you feel confident in the next steps.

Tailored Solutions
From vision therapy to referrals or custom lens options, we offer solutions that support your child’s development and daily life. Everything is designed to fit your family’s needs—with care that continues beyond the exam room.

Optical Experience
If your child needs glasses, our opticians make the process fun and stress-free. We offer a wide selection of comfortable, kid-friendly frames and help your child choose something they’ll love to wear (and won’t lose at recess).

How Often Should Kids Have Eye Exams?
We follow the Canadian Association of Optometrists’ guidelines, which recommend:
-
6 – 9 months: First eye exam
-
2 – 5 years: At least one more exam before starting school
-
6 – 18 years: Every year while in school
Children’s eyes develop rapidly, and problems like myopia (nearsightedness) are on the rise. Annual exams help ensure early detection and timely treatment, so nothing stands in their way.
