What is Dry AMD (Age-Related Macular Degeneration)?
Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of vision loss in adults over the age of 55. It occurs when the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp and detailed vision, begins to break down.
This condition affects the vision you rely on most for reading, driving, recognizing faces, and enjoying hobbies that require fine detail. Unlike wet AMD, which can cause sudden changes, dry AMD usually progresses gradually over time.
Can Dry AMD Progress to Wet AMD?
Yes. In some patients, dry AMD can progress to wet AMD. This is why regular comprehensive eye exams and early detection are so important. The earlier we identify changes in the macula, the better we can protect your vision.
What Can Be Done for Dry AMD?
While there is currently no cure for dry AMD, there are several proven ways to slow its progression and support long-term eye health. At Lynn Valley Optometry, we take a comprehensive approach:
MacuMira Microcurrent Therapy
We are proud to offer MacuMira, the first Health Canada–approved, clinically proven therapy for Dry AMD. This non-invasive, pain-free treatment uses gentle microcurrents to re-energize retinal cells and improve their function. Patients often experience sharper vision, better contrast, and more ease with daily activities such as reading, using the computer, or recognizing faces.
Nutrition & Supplements
Research shows that targeted nutrients can strengthen and protect the retina. We offer MacuHealth, Vision Essence, and premium omega-3 supplements to give your eyes consistent protection. Nutrition acts like “insurance” for your vision, helping to calm inflammation, improve blood flow, and keep retinal cells stable.
At-Home Support
Aruna Light Therapy: A safe and easy-to-use device that stimulates energy production in retinal cells, extending the benefits of in-office treatment.
Protective Eyewear: Blue-light–filtering glasses and sunglasses with full UV protection reduce stress on your eyes and help slow AMD progression.
Lifestyle Monitoring: Monthly Amsler grid checks allow you to spot early changes in your central vision at home.
Healthy Daily Habits
A diet rich in leafy greens, colorful fruits, and omega-3s supports the macula from within. Combined with regular exercise, healthy routines can preserve your vision and overall wellness.
