Every October, the world comes together to recognize the importance of vision and eye health. World Sight Day takes place this year on Thursday, October 9, 2025, led by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB). The theme, “Love Your Eyes,” is a powerful reminder to make eye care part of our everyday lives — and to ensure it’s accessible to everyone.

Why World Sight Day Matters

Globally, more than 1 billion people live with vision loss that could have been prevented or treated. But eye health isn’t just a global issue — it’s one that touches us here in North Vancouver every day.

Between screen time, outdoor lifestyles, and aging populations, our community faces unique eye health challenges:

  • Digital eye strain is common among professionals and students spending hours in front of screens.

  • Outdoor enthusiasts — hikers, skiers, cyclists — need UV protection and regular eye exams to protect against long-term damage.

  • Age-related conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration are growing concerns for our aging population.

  • Dry eye disease is becoming increasingly common, especially in our climate with seasonal changes.

World Sight Day reminds us that prioritizing vision care today helps preserve quality of life for tomorrow.

“Love Your Eyes” in North Vancouver

The global campaign encourages everyone to pledge to love their eyes by:

  • Booking an eye exam — Even if your vision feels fine, routine exams can catch early signs of disease. → Book a comprehensive eye exam

  • Supporting children’s vision — Back-to-school eye exams ensure kids can learn, play, and grow with healthy eyesight. Some learning difficulties can actually be linked to undiagnosed vision or visual processing issues, and early detection through eye exams and vision therapy can make a life-changing difference. → Learn more about Vision Therapy

    • Make it fun: Try the “What Your Eyes Can Do” activity sheet with your kids. From testing how fast they can blink to watching their pupils change size in the mirror, these quick experiments spark curiosity and help children understand just how amazing their eyes are.

Promoting workplace wellness — Employers can help by including eye health in wellness programs. Simple changes like better lighting, screen breaks, and ergonomic setups go a long way. Encourage your team to book regular eye exams and explore resources like the 6 Ways to Reduce Eye Strain guide and the Workplace Eye Health Checklist to make eye care part of the workday.

  • Practicing daily care — From wearing sunglasses outdoors to taking screen breaks, small habits make a difference. Eating a balanced diet rich in eye-friendly nutrients like omega-3s, lutein, and vitamins A, C, and E also supports long-term vision health.

Here in North Vancouver, clinics like ours are committed to offering advanced diagnostics and treatments, from comprehensive exams to specialized care for conditions like dry eye, myopia control, and macular degeneration.
